Bavarian State Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry - Bavarian State Institute of Forestry (Bayerische Landesanstalt für Wald und Forstwirtschaft, LWF)

The Bavarian State Institute for Forestry and Forestry (LWF), a Bavarian Forest Administration research facility, conducts applied research as the basis for sustainable, i.e. competitive, ecological and socially responsible forest management. Furthermore, it provides forestry practice and the public with new findings from research and long-term studies to ensure the preservation and strengthening of the various forest functions.

In its function as a service point, the LWF supports the Bavarian State Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Forests (StMELF) and the other forest authorities in fulfilling the following tasks:

  • We are researching all relevant topics of sustainable forest management, primarily focusing on the challenges of climate change, the protection and improvement of forest functions, and the forestry sector's competitiveness.
  • We are a competent contact partner for all forest issues, and we are developing concepts to improve the dialogue about forests with society.
  • We develop climate risk concepts for tomorrow's forest, including alternative tree species, thus creating an essential basis for forward-looking forest advisory services.
  • We compile knowledge about forests and forestry and produce approaches and solutions of direct practical relevance. Finally, we present our knowledge and monitoring results clearly and comprehensibly.
  • We provide information to forest owners on sustainable management of the forest and the use of timber.
  • We work out precautionary strategies addressing climate change and offer support to forest owners.
  • We collaborate with other institutions and promote research on forests and forestry.
  • We apply forest pedagogy – concepts, materials and best-practice-projects within our tasks for communication and education.
